Eloqua Nurture Campaigns: Canvas Optimisation Tips | Episode 2
September Eloqua User Group | All About Growth | 3-part series
Last updated: 23 September 2026 | Derek Bell
Overview
If you joined our September Eloqua User Group webinar, you will know we spent the session diving into one of the most vital strategic engines in Eloqua: lead nurture campaigns.
While it is easy to let nurture campaigns run in the background, keeping them effective takes intentional care. Nurture campaigns should continuously move prospects through the funnel, align messaging with real buyer behaviour, and deliver fresh content that drives action.
In this second episode of our All About Growth series, we focused on the core updates you can make to your Eloqua campaign canvas to eliminate friction, maintain content freshness, and get more value from every workflow.

Why this topic?
A lot of nurture campaigns get stuck in the narrow mindset of “We just need to send a series of emails to stay top-of-mind.”
Eloqua nurture campaigns are far more capable than standard drip series. They support a variety of strategic outcomes, including:
- Converting net new leads into sales-ready prospects
- Educating existing clients on new products and upsell opportunities
- Delivering automated onboarding sequences for new customers
- Driving targeted seasonal initiatives and contract renewal reminders
The main takeaway here is that when you treat lead nurturing as a dynamic buyer journey layer, rather than a static email queue, you deliver the right message at the right time.
This keeps your content fresh, prevents audience fatigue, and shortens your sales cycle.

Rethink your campaign canvas design
Following our August post on Eloqua form conversions, Episode 2 of our All About Growth series steps right into the heart of campaign strategy.
If your lead nurture efforts feel a bit stagnant, running a Nurture Audit will help you spot friction points, clean up your workflows, and build a journey that moves prospects smoothly through your funnel.
Here are the key habits and structural updates to make in Eloqua right now.
- Set far-future end dates for always-on campaigns: Prevent unexpected shutdowns on continuous nurture streams by setting your campaign canvas end date far into the future (such as 2050). This keeps the campaign running continuously while giving you total control over when to update or retire content.
- Keep calendar campaigns separate: Maintain distinct canvas flows for fixed-term initiatives like seasonal promos, product launches, or event invites. Mixing fixed-date workflows into an always-on nurture canvas creates unnecessary complexity. You can use shared filters to evaluate how many emails a person has been sent in X period of time to control when nurture emails are sent. This can be helpful if you want to prioritise an event invitation targeting those in a nurture campaign.
- Build granular segment routes: Run multiple audience segments through your canvas instead of a single broad audience. See the screenshot below. This allows you to track performance across different regions or buyer personas without creating separate campaigns. You can also use dynamic content in your emails and on your landing pages to tailor messages based on any account, contact or custom object data.
Control messaging pace & flow
- Manage campaign entry and exit paths cleanly: Standardise how contacts enter from your CRM, forms, or manual uploads. Crucially, you may want to set up immediate exit points when a prospect becomes a customer or shows zero engagement over an extended period.
- Pace delivery with evaluation periods: Use wait steps and evaluation periods based on actions rather than arbitrary fixed timelines. Engage with your campaign members as they show engagement i.e. clicks, website visits and form submissions are better indicators of engagement than a simple open.
The Evaluation period is the time period in which you want to evaluate a canvas step. For example, “Clicked Email”.
- If the evaluation period is set to 0, Oracle Eloqua will evaluate the contact immediately.
- If the evaluation period is set for 24 hours or less, Oracle Eloqua will retry the evaluation every 10 minutes.
- If the evaluation period is set for more than 1 day, Oracle Eloqua will retry the evaluation every 30 minutes.
- If the evaluation period is set for more than 1 week, Oracle Eloqua will retry the evaluation once every hour.
Think of it like a small child in the back seat of your car on a road trip – Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are you with me?
For example, if you take option 3 above, using the “Opened Email?” step. You’ve asked to evaluate for 5 days. Eloqua will ask the question every 30 minutes for 5 days. Have they opened? Have they opened? Have they opened?
As soon as they meet the criteria, they will progress in the positive/true direction. If, at the end of the 5-day period, the person has not opened the email, they will progress in the negative/false direction.
Leverage smart delivery tools: Implement Send Time Optimisation and Shared Filters to match content delivery to individual buyer behaviour. Over the duration of the nurture campaign, it’s highly likely you will learn more about a person.
The more first-party data you gather, e.g. their industry, their primary interest, their #1 business problem, the more this information can be used to move the person to a parallel nurture campaign with a more targeted message based on what you now know about them.
Maintain content freshness & relevance
Establish a 3-4 month review schedule: Set calendar reminders to audit assets regularly. Support these meetings with Insight reports and dashboards. Avoiding time-sensitive content/offers is generally the best approach for an always-on nurture. However, it’s not always possible. Diarise all time-sensitive offers so outdated material never reaches a prospect.
TIP: Once you’ve completed your testing, the sign-offs are done, and you’re ready to activate your campaign, add your stakeholders to a “Seed List” segment to ensure they get to go through the campaign ahead of your nurture campaign members. By adding them to the canvas in their own segment, you can also exclude them from campaign reporting.
Share docs outside Eloqua: Create reference guides with email screenshots and links behind calls-to-action so sales and product stakeholders can review content without needing Eloqua logins.
Decentralise content updates: Have individual departments take ownership of updating their specific messaging, while marketing operations maintains master control over the Eloqua assets, i.e. emails, landing pages, forms and campaign canvas execution. One Marketing Cube client cut their time-to-purchase from 120 days to 60 days simply by refining audience segments and adhering to a strict content edit schedule.
Client Success Story
Our client heads up a marketing operations team and serves 13+ distinct departments, each with their own objectives and priorities.
THE BUSINESS PROBLEM:
In the past, departments were bombarding the Eloqua team with constant requests with no set routine. This created a mess for the Eloqua team simply trying to manage version control and keep data fresh and on-brand.
THE SOLUTION:
Marketing created an update and optimisation schedule and shared it with all departments. This provides for a more measured experience. Marketing is still busy, but there is now a rhythm to the process, which means managing edits and content updates is organised along with a defined review and approval process.
ANALYTICS PLAYED A ROLE:
With a range of Oracle Insight Dashboards and reports, departments had access to campaign and asset performance to support their decision-making process when it came to measuring content success. Marketing was able to provide expert optimisation advice while maximising the functional aspects of Eloqua, e.g., Send Time Optimisation, nurture campaign velocity, i.e. how quickly or slowly a person progressed through the nurture.
Drive Optimisation with Eloqua & Insight Dashboards
Define reporting needs first: Build your canvas around the metrics you need to report on later. For example, your nurture campaign will likely have campaign members from various sources, e.g. Social Media campaigns, the CRM, or website lead capture. If you have these various groups enter the campaign canvas in unique segments, you can then view Eloqua Dashboard reports by segment. This means you can start to get clarity about which sources deliver the best quality leads.
Track micro-conversions: Look beyond high-level opens and clicks. Track incremental profile updates, progressive form fills, and targeted content downloads to gauge real movement.
Ditch manual reporting: Set up automated Insight reports sent straight to your inbox every month to monitor asset health continuously.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why should we optimise our Eloqua nurture campaign canvas?
A: Optimising your campaign canvas helps eliminate friction, maintain content freshness, and guide prospects smoothly through your sales funnel. Treating your nurture streams as dynamic buyer journeys rather than static email queues shortens your sales cycle and boosts engagement.
Q: How do we prevent continuous Eloqua campaigns from shutting down unexpectedly?
A: Set far-future end dates, such as 2050, for your always-on nurture streams. This setting keeps your campaign canvas running continuously, ensuring you maintain full control over when to update, pause, or retire your content.
Q: Should we mix fixed-date promos into an always-on campaign canvas?
A: Keep calendar-based campaigns separate. Mixing fixed-term initiatives into continuous workflows adds unnecessary complexity. Use shared filters in Eloqua to manage email frequency and prioritise short-term offers without breaking your main nurture flow.
Q: How do evaluation periods work within Eloqua campaign elements?
A: Evaluation periods check if contacts complete specific actions, like clicking an email. Depending on your time frame setting, the platform checks every 10 to 30 minutes, moving contacts along positive or negative paths based on their activity.
Q: How often should we audit content in our nurture campaigns?
A: Set a review schedule every three to four months. Use Oracle Insight dashboards to evaluate asset health, track micro-conversions, and remove outdated content before it reaches your prospects.
Q: What is the best way to test an Eloqua nurture campaign before launch?
A: Add internal stakeholders to a dedicated Seed List segment on your campaign canvas. This lets your team experience the full nurture flow ahead of launch while keeping their data out of your primary campaign reporting.
Q: How can we measure lead quality across different audience sources?
A: Route incoming prospects into your campaign canvas using separate audience segments based on their entry source. You can then analyse dashboard reports by segment to see which channels bring in your highest-quality leads.
