Overview

In previous episodes, we’ve outlined a framework for your lead nurture campaigns.

This month, our focus was on how to maximise the functional aspects of Eloqua’s Multi-Step Campaign canvas to execute your lead nurture campaign.

Why this topic?

Over the years, we’ve devoted multiple hours of User Group episodes to Lead Nurture campaigns. In 2023 we dedicated 3 episodes, over three months to the core topic of Lead Nurture campaigns. You can access them below.

What’s different about this episode?

In this episode, we focused on the design of the lead nurture campaign using Eloqua’s Multi-Step Campaign Canvas. We covered the core canvas elements, explored Shared Filters and tips for the overall flow and CX of your lead nurture campaign.

Eloqua Campaign Canvas architecture for nurture strategy

In our User Group session this month, we covered how to build effective nurture campaigns using Eloqua’s campaign canvas, emphasising the strategic use of decision, evaluation, and wait steps to create personalised buyer journeys.

We introduced “Jenny,” a prospect looking to purchase a BMW, as a case study to illustrate how nurture campaigns guide prospects through their decision-making process.

Nurture campaigns serve multiple strategic purposes: delivering relevant content tailored to the buyer’s journey stage, building trust with prospects over time, prioritising qualified leads for sales teams, and personalising communications based on known data.

By their very nature, nurture campaigns are typically “always-on,” continuously listening for qualifying contacts and automatically enrolling them, distinguishing them from calendar-based or ad-hoc campaigns that operate on fixed schedules.

We demonstrate how to leverage campaign canvas decision steps to evaluate prospect behaviour and adjust their journey accordingly. Key decision steps include comparing contact fields (such as industry or primary interest), monitoring website visits, tracking email opens and clicks, and evaluating form submissions.

For more sophisticated evaluation, shared filters offer additional functionality, enabling marketers to ask complex questions, such as whether a prospect clicked at least 3 of the first 5 nurture emails within a specific timeframe, rather than being limited to single-asset evaluations.

Lead Scoring integration & dynamic journey management

Lead scoring integration can play a critical role in identifying marketing-qualified leads (MQLs) and optimising prospect journeys. In our session, we explored how to use shared filters to check lead scores at strategic points throughout the nurture campaign, enabling marketers to route prospects based on engagement levels and profile quality.

The session demonstrated two primary applications of lead scoring within campaign canvas: determining when prospects reach the MQL threshold (typically defined as A1, A2, or B1, B2, depending on organisational standards) and monitoring changes in lead scores to identify increases or decreases in engagement.

When prospects achieve MQL status, marketers can either continue their nurture journey while simultaneously pushing them to the CRM or redirect them entirely to sales-focused workflows.

Dynamic journey management enables marketers to accelerate or slow the progression of prospects based on engagement signals. Highly engaged prospects may benefit from shorter wait times between communications, while prospects with declining engagement may be moved to alternative nurture tracks or paused entirely.

The session also covered using “Move to Campaign” rather than “Add to Campaign” steps strategically. The former removes prospects from the current campaign and places them in a new one (an exit point), while the latter enrols them in an additional campaign while maintaining their position in the original workflow.

Reporting & optimisation of your Lead Nurture campaign

Campaign and email performance dashboards provide baseline metrics for monitoring nurture effectiveness, with the recommendation to analyse the best-and worst-performing assets (excluding the first email, which typically performs best by default).

Advanced intelligence features, including fatigue analysis and send-time optimisation, offer additional optimisation opportunities, though fatigue analysis requires 45 days of data before assigning fatigue levels to new contacts.

For organisations running sophisticated, long-term nurture campaigns, custom Oracle Eloqua Insight dashboards provide comprehensive, campaign-specific views that track new contact additions, campaign exits, CRM integration metrics, and opportunity management data, all on a single screen tailored to specific KPIs and business objectives.

Microsoft issues impacting deliverability

There are some current Microsoft deliverability issues affecting Outlook, Hotmail, Live, and MSN domains. Multiple clients across various platforms have experienced sudden drops in delivery rates, from a typical 97-99% to as low as 63%, particularly when sending high-volume campaigns.

Microsoft is working to resolve the issue, which appears to be blocking atypical sending volumes. The recommended short-term solution is to implement batch delivery to break large sends into smaller segments and to monitor spam reports daily until Microsoft resolves the problem.

Marketers experiencing sudden deliverability drops should analyse campaign members by domain to determine whether Microsoft addresses account for the bulk of failed deliveries.

Eloqua Release 26A Highlights

What’s news? What’s coming soon?

All clients were live on Release 26A by the last half of February 2026. You can see a summary of the key features here in last month’s blog post.

How we used GenAI this month

Late last year, we upgraded our Zoom Webinars subscription to Zoom Webinars Plus. There were two primary reasons for the move:

  1. An enhanced experience for you – our webinar attendees
  2. Zoom AI and the output from each webinar.

From every webinar we host, Zoom Webinars Plus and Zoom AI produce drafts of  the following:

  • A summary
  • An eBook
  • An all hands recap
  • An email
  • Key Takeaways
  • A Social Media Post

What did I think of the output?

Well, you tell me. You have access to most of it from this blog post. If you’re an Eloqua User Group subscriber, the post-webinar email copy was drafted by Zoom AI, with post-editing by me..

This blog post was generated by Zoom AI from the webinar transcript. Unlike most LLMs, the content is developed from my spoken words.  In the spirit of transparency, we have a strict policy to always keep a “human in the loop”. This means the final product you see here has been reviewed and edited by a colleague and me. We’ve tried not to edit it extensively so you can get a sense of the raw content developed by Zoom AI.

The key difference is the tone, it speaks to you more in a reporting style. You can adjust the tone, but we’ve gone with the original output. My initial thoughts are that the copy is written to incentivise readers to access the replay. Let’s see if that works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is lead nurturing?
A: Lead nurturing is a strategic marketing approach that uses relevant content and data to build strong relationships with potential customers. It guides prospects through their buying journey using “always-on” communications to boost long-term engagement and conversions.

Q: Why should I automate my lead nurture campaign flow?
A: Automating your lead nurture campaign flow using the Oracle Eloqua platform helps you move beyond manual, ad hoc emails. It ensures consistent, timely interaction with your audience, minimises campaign update effort, and delivers reliable data insights.

Q: How do Decision Elements work within the Eloqua Campaign Canvas?
A: Decision Elements evaluate specific contact actions, such as opening an email. Based on a yes-or-no response, Eloqua automatically directs contacts down tailored paths, allowing you to deliver follow-up messages based on observed digital body language.

Q: How does 1st-party data support lead nurturing?
A: With third-party cookies phasing out, 1st-party data collected through custom forms is vital. This information enables precise audience segmentation and buyer persona creation, helping you deliver personalised, relevant communications to the right people.

Q: How frequently should I send nurture emails to contacts?
A: Email frequency depends on your specific audience and campaign objectives. You can adjust wait steps dynamically within Eloqua, or ask your prospects directly through progressive profiling how often they prefer to receive updates from you.

Q: Where should I start if I am building a lead nurture flow for the first time?
A: Start simply by selecting a specific, manageable audience segment with a clear call to action. Review your performance data in Eloqua, refine your approach, and gradually add complex paths or buyer personas as you learn what works.

Q: How do Eloqua Insight Dashboards help manage lead nurture campaigns?
A: Insight Dashboards provide clear visual representations of live campaign performance. By tracking real-time metrics, you can easily spot drop-off points, evaluate asset performance, and optimise your Eloqua nurture flows to meet your objectives.
